Why do Scouts make such great comedians? Because they're always PREPARED!

Words by Tyler 'Crash' Stark

An arena full of excited Scouts wasn't a typical crowd for Aussie comedians Mel Buttle and Dave 'Hughesy' Hughes, but an engaging audience ready for some good laughs – along with hilarious MC Terry Hansen – made for an unforgettable night!

We had the opportunity to chat to Mel and Hughesy before the show, where we got to talk about their expectations of performing at a Scout event – which was unchartered territory for both comedians.

“I have never performed to 8,000 teenagers before,” Mel told us. “But I think stand-up comedy and children are such a good match.”

The pair both had some concerns about keeping their material Scout appropriate while on stage, but were thrilled to learn about the Scout motto: Be Prepared.

We had the great honour of presenting Mel and Hughesy with AJ2025 event scarves. Mel in particular was thrilled when she came on stage – even reciting the Scout Promise.

“I've got my woggle, am I a Scout now?” she asked, but after heated debate about which hand to use when making the Scout sign (yes, it is the right hand!), she was beginning to have second thoughts. “I don't think I can be a Scout, it's too full on.”

“I'm not doing much stand-up comedy, but I'm learning a lot about Scouts!” Mel said near the end of her routine.

Hughesy joined Mel, along with Terry, when all three signed a very lucky Scout's handmade sign on stage.

Hughesy brought his infectious energy with him when he excitedly declared “This is the best gig I have done in my entire life!”

“This is better than Disneyland,” he said. “You're going to have the time of your life and you'll remember it forever!”

Not to be outdone by Amy Shark and Mitch Tambo, Hughesy wanted to make sure that the night would be unforgettable for as many Scouts as possible. He stayed back for a full hour after the show finished to sign as many hats, signs and shirts as possible.

“You've been the best crowd I have ever had!”
