“Beautiful one day, perfect the next”

Words by Tyler 'Crash' Stark

Camp Chief Geoff Doo said it best at last night's Opening Ceremony for the 26th Australian Jamboree: “We say in Queensland that it is Beautiful One Day and Perfect the Next,” as he addressed the crowd of almost 10,000 Scouters that filled the Main Arena. “And your presence here at this Jamboree certainly makes for perfection!”

Determined to outdo AJ2013 – the last Jamboree to be held at Maryborough, Queensland – we were treated to a jam packed opening ceremony, led by Queensland Scouts and Venturers Harry, Mickala, Griffin, Tess and Alice.

The proceedings opened with a bang – literally! - with a teaser of fire canons accompanying the countdown to start of the performances. The flames continued with the extraordinary talents of Amanda Le Bon and her fire performers that were almost too hot to handle!

Kim Walker Shantel Ah Kit, Butchulla Native of the Gubbi Gubbi people, led our welcome to country with a traditional smoking ceremony to rid us of bad energy and usher in good energy for our time here. Kim asked us to remember three rules: “What is good for the country must come first. Don't take what's not yours, and only take what you need, and if you've got plenty – then share.”

The stunning Emma Irene led us in the Australian National Anthem between choreographed numbers from the talented Scout Cast, including a special guest appearance from local star, Mary Poppins!

Mitch Tambo - Aria award winning and number one Australian Gamilaraay artist - exploded onto the stage with his unmatchable energy, while the flag procession travelled through the crowd, with representatives from our 16 international contingents.

Our Camp Chief, Geoff Doo, led the camp in the re-affirmation of the Scout Promise and Law.

“I encourage you to try new things, to test your limits,” he said. “Stay safe, enjoy yourself, and most of all have FUN!”

AJ2025 was officially opened by our honoured guest, Her Excellency Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM, who is the Governor and State Chief Scout of Queensland, just as the first Australian Jamboree was opened by the Governor General, Sir Isaac Isaacs, in 1934.

“You will take part in an incredible range of activities, challenge yourselves to try something you never have before, learn new skills, and be endlessly inspired.”

With AJ2025 officially open, the Main Arena erupted with cheers and screams as the sky above Maryborough filled with an epic fireworks display.

AJ2025 is sure to be lit!
